November 12, 1817 Birth of Baha'u'llah

On 12 November 1817 in Teheran, the capital of Persia, a son was born to a prominent minister of state, Mirza Buzurg, and his wife Khadijih. The boy, to whom they gave the names of Husayn-Ali, was later to be known as Baha'u'llah. The child led a carefree life, growing up as a member of a
wealthy family who never suspected that their son might one day proclaim Himself to be the great Universal Teacher foretold by every earlier Messenger of God...

HOLY DAY FOR BAHÁ'ÍS AND CHRISTIANS

For most people Friday 21 March is significant as Good Friday, one of the
most important days of the Christian year. For Bahais also significant and
it is New Year's Day.

"Friday is actually the start of spring", said local Baha'i "For us this is
also New Year's Day, the beginning of year 165 of our religion. It began in
Persia, but in that century-and-a-half it has been established in almost
every country..."

Easter is a time of renewal of hope for Christians, and for Baha'is also
this is a period of new beginnings. Since Baha'is love and venerate Christ
we are happy to share in this special time.

"In fact that used to be the custom in this country. Just as the earth is
coming alive after the winter, so we can start afresh and commit ourselves
to a spiritual reawakening. This new year is being celebrated in thousands
of places all over the country as Baha'is rededicate themselves at this
time to serving the wider community."
